The field of 'consultancy' has a very mixed reputation, unfortunately bordering on the negative! Most consultants tend to subscribe to a model of consultancy that is inherently loaded against success. This consulting model, and one that is followed through out the world, is usually unnecessarily labour intensive, long in cycle time (for obvious reasons), and therefore low in return in investment. It further tends to lock both the client and the consultant into a fundamentally ineffective mode of operation where there is a clear divide between the two parties; the consultant is accountable for creating the best possible solutions and tools, and the client is accountable for exploiting those solutions and tools to improve results.

In most cases, however, the client does not or cannot implement the consultant-developed solutions in the way that they were intended to be implemented, and therefore, the implementation does not result in significant improvement.
